Trebarwith Road

Many of us very much consider Trebarwith Road Quarry our home as it could be said that this is where it all began.

Initially the site was just rented, but eventually the opportunity to buy came along & the Trebarwith Road Rustic Quarry truly developed & grew.

The quarry is located on the outskirts of the village of Delabole on the north Cornish coast.

The area has a number of working quarries harnessing the slate laid down during the Devonian period some 400 million years ago.

The village of Delabole is world famous for slate as the quarry has operated for around 1000yrs. It may be the oldest continually worked quarry in the world. Some 10 million tonnes have already been mined, but it is said that there are mineral reserves for another millennium. Pre 1841 it is said that there were 5 quarries on the site & they were combined to make the Old Delabole Quarry. In 1910 some 500 people were employed, today considerably fewer are employed.

The village is not only famous for its slate. It was the birthplace of the Cornwall Air Ambulance, and the first commercial wind-farm in the UK stands on the outskirts of the village.

It once had about 6 pubs & 5 churches/chapels as well as a large selection of shops. Cornwall is the land of saints & sinners after all. I’ve lived in the village of Delabole for about 15 years having moved to Cornwall in 2004. I worked in various different fields & first started working at Trebarwith Road in 2021 on 2 days a week.

My understanding is that the land here has been quarried as far back as the 18th Century. Working through layers of blue grey slate as well as Rustic layers. Depending upon when they were laid down & the conditions at the time the colours vary. You could always be lucky enough to find a fossil of a once living ancient creature when you split open a piece of slate.

By the time I arrived there had already been many changes to the land that had been dug. Since then, more land has been brought into the scope of working ground, fresh ground has been excavated & machines have come & gone. The Quarry now covers an area of approximately 10 acres & employs about 6 people in various roles.

We continue to work with suppliers new & old, as well as customers new & existing. Not every enquiry is the same as you all have different needs & projects are varied. We always look forward to helping you to full-fill your ideas & love to see images of the end results. No two days are ever the same & I’d like to say no challenge too big but we do have our limits.

Why not give us a ring & see what we can do for you. 01840 211300.
