May has been a busy and exciting month across our three slate quarries, with everything from national garden design recognition to 3D photography, hot weather, bank holidays and busy roofing slate orders. Here’s a little look at what has been happening.
Chelsea Flower Show:
If you didn’t see our most recent social media post, then you wouldn’t know about our stone’s involvement in this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Darren Hawkes, together with The Lady Garden Foundation, created the stunning ‘Silent No More’ garden, which featured stone from our Trebarwith Quarry. From Hedging Stone to Facing Stone, our Cornish slate was used to create a beautiful reusable path through the garden.
The garden was awarded a Gold Medal and the Best Construction Award, and we are deeply proud to see our stone showcased in such a breathtaking way.
3D Image of Trevillett:
We recently had a keen university student, currently studying Marine and Natural History Photography, approach us to create a 3D Image of our Trevillett Quarry as part of their university work.
The completed model is linked below, and we have to say, we’re thrilled with the result. As you may know, we are very proud of our quarries, so to see someone put this level of care, time and creativity into capturing Trevillett was genuinely impressive.
It is always fascinating to see the quarries from a new perspective, and this project certainly gave us that.
Weather/Bank Holiday:
What a scorcher it has been lately! The last week of May has brought a real taste of summer to the quarries. Whilst there is no escaping the heat, the clearer weather does tend to improve with grip underfoot. Less sludge, but more dust to manage. Keeping everyone hydrated, dust control and ensuring that machinery is coping with the conditions have all been part of the rhythm of the month and is a reminder that quarrying is shaped by the weather as stone is shaped by the quarry.
May also brought two bank holidays, which means fewer working days to get everything done. With that in mind, keeping stone orders moving quickly and efficiently has remained our top priority.
Roofing Slate:
As the weather improves, our roofing slate orders have been flying out. For all of you sun lovers out there, now is the perfect time to get roofers up and working on a new slate roof while the conditions are on their side.
Ideally, that means them working away while you sip piña coladas from the comfort of your garden. That’s until the rain starts again and it will be more like drinking lukewarm tea from the sofa.
Either way, our roofing slate has been in high demand and we are looking forward to seeing what June brings.
