Winter Slate Quarry Operations: Production in the cold weather.

British weather, as we all know, can be quite unexpected and unpredictable. Here’s how the colder months affect our slate quarries:

Weather-Sensitive Products: 803 Sub-Base

One of our products that is most impacted by the weather is the 803 Sub-Base. It relies on interlocking particles. Excessive water breaks that lock, meaning that when conditions are too wet, its ability to compact reduces significantly. Instead of a solid base, you’re left with something closer to a stony sludge.

Then there’s the ice. When temperatures plummet, the surface of a layer of 803 can clump together in icy and frosty conditions – step on it and you might find yourself slipping into the winter spirit… literally! A well compacted layer will withstand the freeze, but only if it has been laid without excess moisture.

Colour Changes in Walling and Hedging:

It’s not just our aggregates that react to the winter weather. Our walling and hedging stone changes colour - It darkens when it’s wet. Prolonged exposure to moisture and oxygen can cause weathering and oxidation, producing golden or rusty tones. We call this colour of stone, rustic. Aside from the colour of the slate, its structure and rigidity remain unaffected.

Slate Chippings:

Some of our other products such as slate chippings are more resilient to winter weather. For example, laying them during wetter months can be beneficial, as they help improve drainage in areas that are prone to water-logging.

Machinery:

Cold temperatures don’t just influence materials, they also affect the equipment we rely on every day to extract, cut and sort stone:

  • Hydraulic systems (slower response, higher risk of hose failures)
  • Diesel engines (need longer to warm up)
  • Tyres and tracks (reduced grip on ice)
  • Conveyors and crushers (material freezing onto the belts or screens)

With production often running at a steadier pace, winter gives quarries more time to focus on the high‑precision, premium‑quality aggregates that meet strict specifications. It gives us the opportunity to refine, maintain and prepare for the busier months ahead.

Despite the winter weather, our quarry teams work continuously to ensure that our products are available all year-round. If you would like any further information or would like to enquire about purchasing any of our products, please do get in touch.
